Open Culture
Open Culture is a concept according to which knowledge should be spread freely and its growth should come from developing, altering or enriching already existing works on the basis of sharing and collaboration, without being restricted by rules linked to the legal protection of intellectual property. Entrepreneur mostly aimed for high profit, but any successful entrepreneur that didn’t just think about the profit, but they also seek an opportunity to improve their social responsibility.
One of them was Mr. Mohamed Bin Ghulam Hussein, the founder of the MYDIN. MYDIN is a chain of the hypermarket, supermarket, and emporiums that were located in Malaysian. MYDIN was listed as one of top hypermarket that Malaysian like to spend their money for purchasing daily necessities. In 1957, Mr. Ghulam opens his first shop that selling toys and general merchandise which was a small wooden shop that was located at JalanTok Hakim, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He operated the small shop named Syarikat Mydin Mohamed with his own earned money.
Nowadays, with his strong determination and passion, MYDIN now was one famous hypermarket in Malaysia. Although he now became one of the successful businessmen, he does not forget to fulfill his responsibility to the society. His business concept was “from society to society”. His business principle was to sell good at wholesale prices. In order to fulfill his responsibility towards society, he also involved in Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia and was entrusted by the government to be one of the operator and distributors in this project. KR1M serves as a medium to control and reduce monopoly prices for essential goods. MYDIN also concerned about the labeling and halal status of that was sold at all of the MYDIN outlets. MYDIN concerned with the priority of the Muslim population that dominated Malaysia. MYDIN also had held many activities that can contribute to the company and mostly society such as humanitarian program, donation for who needed and other. For example, MYDIN was involved in a contribution to flood victims through “Tabung Bantuan Kemanusiaan Mangsa Banjir” in collaboration with the Association of Kota Bharu (POKB).
